The Internet and Health
January 11th, 2010 |
When we think of the Internet, we usually think of the wealth of information that it provides us with. But the Internet isn’t all fun and games when it comes to public health. Here are some health hazards that overexposure to the Net can cause:
1. Eye strain.
The problem with staring at a computer for long periods of time is that your eyes are constantly focusing on things right in front of you. It’s unhealthy because our eyes should be focusing on things that are at varying distances. So if you use computers and the Net during the whole day, it’s crucial that you take a break every hour and do something that requires you to look at things that are near, far, and in-between. This can help to prevent a host of problems that can result from sitting in front of a computer all day.
2. Neck and back strain.
Another problem of people who constantly use computers and the Net, is neck and back strain. This is due to the body remaining in a constant position for an extended period of time. The problem becomes even worse when you’re not sitting at an ideal distance and height from the monitor. While the need to work at a computer is mandatory for many of us, you can still take steps to alleviate the stress on your neck and lower back. From time-to-time, get up and walk around, in order to stretch out your muscles and keep them limber. There are also some effective exercises that you can do from your workstation, to prevent your muscles from stiffening up.
3. Shorter attention spans.
While the Internet has become more and more sensationalized, one of the drawbacks is that it has also contributed to the shortening of the general public’s attention span. This can result in various disorders, such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). While the Internet constantly feeds us with information, it does this by bombarding us with an array of different media that are designed to grab our attention-and then hold onto it.
How can you deal with this potential problem? Spend more time doing less sensationalized activities. Go for a stroll in the park, read a book, or talk in person with a friend or family member. While such activities won’t knock your socks off with as much input for your senses, they can still be enjoyable and mentally stimulating.
4. Unclear sense of identity.
Social networking can be a fantastic way to meet new friends and keep up with old ones. But one of the drawbacks is that it can provide us with an unstable sense of identity. We become defined by the bells and whistles of our social networking site, how many virtual friends we’ve added, and so on. In fancy psychological terms, our “self-concept” becomes strictly defined by how others perceive us. This can be unhealthy emotionally, as poor reviews or few virtual friends can result in a lower self-esteem.
Can the Internet be beneficial? Sure, on several different levels. But it’s also important that we keep in mind some of the detrimental effects it can have on our body, mind and emotions.

Good information here on this blog. I spend so much time sitting in front of the screen that I need to make sure I am taking occasional breaks to avoid the problems you mentioned. Thanks for the reminder.
