Could Mobile Wimax Be the Future of Wireless Internet?

The term Wi-Fi has solidified itself as a household name around the nation, but much like the VCR before there arrived the invention of the DVD, technology is known for having rapid changes and new innovations before the general public can even become accustomed. In the case of wireless internet technology, a new player has entered the game with the name Wimax. You may not have even heard of the technology as it is just catching on to have a more practical mainstream use, yet despite its slower notoriety, Wimax maybe the future of mobile broadband.
Wimax is promoted as being an alternative to cable and DSL for “last mile” broadband access, and for connecting already existing Wi-Fi hotspots to the internet. The purpose for the slogan of “last mile” connectivity is that the creators Wimax Forum hope to essentially provide portable connectivity to areas where wireless internet has been economically inaccessible. Wimax Forum started in 2001 with the goal of combining interoperability of broadband wireless products based upon a harmonized wireless internet technology standard.
Today, Wimax Forum operates as a growing company of over 500 employees with a focus of continuing to assimilate their developed product into the wireless market. Although they are the new kid on the block, Wimax technology will have to fight with other technologies that are also trying to establish themselves in the market. Some of products which are said to compete with Wimax in the future include long range Wi-Fi and mesh networking. Yet despite the competition, one of the potential major factors to Wimax success has to do with their focus on mobility and portability. The goal is to incorporate their services on all sorts of portable units including: handsets, PC Peripherals, and embedded devices in laptops.
Another way that Wimax hopes to become the household name in the marketplace is through their Wimax Forum Certification Program. The program is attained by using standards-based, interoperable solutions. The company conducts conformance and interoperability testing on different vendor systems in order to give legitimacy to the products being sold by the vendors and their compatibility with Wimax with which the network operators can flexibly deploy the broadband wireless systems. The operator’s knowledge of the products deployed and certified allows the system to interoperate without problems and decreases the investment risk of the company and creates a marketplaces with viable prices.
As with any new company the technology being introduced will need some time to catch on. However, Wimax seems to be crossing the frontier into a brand new way to use wireless internet technology. In fact, it will probably be only a matter of time before all new developing products whether they are cell phones, laptops, and PC cards have the trademark Wimax name. You will no longer have to fret about trying to find the wireless hotspot for your mobile device in a time of need. With Wimax no matter where you move will be a interoperable wireless world.
