Speeds are measured by Mbps and in this country range from 0.5 Mbps (the slowest broadband available) to around 50 Mbps (Only available in selected cities through Virgin Media).

The UK average speed is only 3 Mbps though, and that’s generally a good enough speed to enjoy the net and most multimedia it can provide. If you’re looking for the absolute fastest connections, it’s cable you should be looking for, but even if you aren’t in a cable area you may still be able to get the equally speed ADSL2 service!

If only one person is online at once and you won’t be doing any heavy downloading, you can keep the slower speeds.

Bandwidth Caps

The bandwidth of your connection will determine how much you will be allowed to download monthly. There’s no point being on an incredibly fast connection if you’re not allowed to use that connection to its fullest!

Even simply browsing the net on Firefox can cause your bandwidth level to go up. Even just light net usage and checking emails in Outlook can cause your bandwidth level to rise.

If you’ve got a bigger family or you want to download plenty of big files, we recommend looking for an unlimited package.. You can find unlimited packages from most providers, but these tend to cost a little bit more than a normal deal. If you don’t want to be watching your limits very often to make sure you aren’t going to get charged for going over them, an unlimited deal is normally the best choice!
